Hit 500 thrift store finds this weekend - didnt realize i was keeping count
I was sorting through my weird stuff pile Saturday night and actually counted them up. 500 individual weird things i've pulled out of thrift bins, sidewalk piles, and dumpsters since i started doing this back in 2019. The milestone one was a ceramic frog playing a tiny banjo from a church rummage sale in Akron. It felt kinda dumb to celebrate a number like that but it made me think about how much garbage i've saved from the dump. My wife thinks i'm crazy but the shelf in the garage is pretty impressive if i do say so. Has anyone else hit a random number like this and stopped to actually count?

500 finds is some serious dedication, even if it sounds like a lot to outsiders. That ceramic frog banjo player sounds like a real gem, probably the kind of thing that makes the whole pile worth it. My shelf in the back room has slowly turned into a museum of misfit toys and nobody gets it but me.

My buddy Dave spent two years hunting down every single version of those little plastic dinosaurs with the googly eyes. He finally found the last one at a flea market in some tiny town in Missouri, wedged behind a stack of old country music CDs in a milk crate. The guy selling it didn't even know it was rare, just charged him fifty cents. Dave still calls me up sometimes just to describe how perfectly that one's eyes are tilted. That's the thing about this stuff, each piece has its own little story that only the person who hunted it down really knows.
