Vent: This weird brass thing I found in a ditch had me stumped for days...

I finally got it open by soaking it in vinegar overnight.

Man, I had the exact same blue gunk problem. Switched to lemon juice mixed with salt for the soak instead, and it came out way cleaner. Still needed a little scrub with an old toothbrush, but nothing like that vinegar crust. Works just as fast without the nasty mess.

That vinegar crust problem reminds me how the easy fix usually makes a second job for you later. Seems to be how most things work around the house.

That vinegar trick works but leaves a nasty blue-green mess all over everything. Had to scrub the thing with a paste of baking soda after to get the residue off. Almost wasn't worth getting it open.
