Overheard a client say 'we just need a logo' and it clicked

They were talking to a friend about hiring a designer, and that phrase made me realize they didn't understand the value of a full brand guide. Now I start every discovery call by asking what problem they're trying to solve with the design, not just what asset they want. Anyone else have a good line to shift that initial conversation?

My brother-in-law runs a small brewery and said the same thing. I asked him what happens when he needs a sign for the taproom, or a truck decal, or merch. He got quiet. That visual gap is where the real cost is.

Actually, that visual gap @craig.grace mentioned is where a lot of small brewers get creative. They find local artists or do simple designs themselves, which can build a more authentic brand. The real cost is more about time than money.

Oh man, that's the sound of his budget crying.
