Appreciation post: My phone's battery life doubled after I stopped a dumb habit

For years I kept my old Samsung S21 plugged in overnight, thinking it was fine. Then I read a review of a new Anker charger that mentioned modern phones stop charging at 100% and just heat up. I checked my battery stats and saw it was sitting at full charge for like 6 hours every night. Stopped doing that last month and my battery actually lasts through the whole day now. Anyone else have a simple gadget habit they had to unlearn?

My buddy used to charge his laptop to 100% and leave it plugged in all day while he worked. He complained it felt like a space heater on his legs. Someone told him to try keeping it between 40 and 80 percent instead. He started doing that and now the fan almost never kicks on, and the battery still holds a charge for hours when he unplugs it. He said it was such a dumb habit he never questioned.

Wait, don't modern phones already have built-in protection to stop charging at 100% to prevent damage? I thought the bigger issue was the heat from being plugged in for so long, like @betty126's friend's laptop. Maybe your old charger was just getting too hot and hurting the battery that way. What kind of charger were you using before?
