Discovering olivine in local basalt opened my eyes to city geology
I began to pause and really look at rocks during my regular walks instead of rushing past them. This simple shift meant checking textures and patterns with a hand lens I keep in my pocket. One evening, I found a dark rock near the curb that had tiny green crystals inside. A quick check confirmed it was basalt with olivine, something I never expected here. That moment felt like a personal victory, even though the rock was common. Now, I see geological stories in every crack and pebble around town. This habit has added a quiet joy to my daily routine.

I always dismissed city rocks as just plain granite or concrete until last year. Finding a piece of gneiss with really clear banding in a parking lot chip made me realize the whole foundation here is a mixed-up history book. It totally changed how I see the built environment.
