A friend made me delete my marquee tags and now I get it

I had this Angelfire page for years with a huge scrolling marquee at the top and blinking text everywhere. Thought it looked awesome. Then a buddy who does actual web work asked me why I hate my visitors' eyes. Ouch. He showed me the same page with the marquee removed and the colors toned down, and it was way easier to read. I spent last week stripping out the blink tags and shrinking the animated GIFs too. Now the site loads in about half the time on my old dial-up rig. Still keeping the starfield background though, that's non-negotiable. Has anyone else made peace with minimal design after swearing by the flashy stuff?
