A guy in an AOL chat room in 1997 showed me his site with 14 frames, and I still think about it
I was hanging out in an AOL chat room in 1997 and this guy kept spamming his homepage link, so I finally clicked it. The site loaded and there were 14 frames on one page, each one its own scrollbar, plus a MIDI file blasting in the background. He said 'the more frames, the more stuff you have to show.' My old Pentium 133 locked up twice just trying to scroll through it. Now when I see single page sites with no structure I think about him. Did any of you ever build a frame monster like that?
Honestly the frame thing was never even the worst part of those sites, it was the MIDI files that auto played and you couldn't find the stop button. The stop button was usually in frame 9 somewhere, buried under a hit counter and a guestbook link. So you'd just sit there listening to some terrible version of the X-Files theme on loop while your mom yelled that the phone line was busy. That's the part I actually miss, the whole shared misery of it. Nobody could load the same page the same way twice and that was somehow fine.
