A kid in a Discord call asked why old sites had "under construction" GIFs, and I honestly got mad at the answer
I was in a voice chat last week with some 19 year old who builds sites with AI tools, and he called the spinning hard hat GIF "lazy design." I told him that in 1997, putting up an under construction page was a promise. You were telling people the site was alive and someone was still working on it at 2am on a Friday. Big sites like geocities pages took weeks to hand code in Notepad, so a placeholder was better than a 404. His take was that it is fake and you should just ship when it is ready, and part of me gets that. But that blinking worker was honest about being half done, which is more than most modern sites ever admit. Anyone else think the placeholder pages were more respectful to visitors than some cookie banner wall?
