A random chat on a Geocities guestbook changed how I see old sites

Back in 1998, I left a comment on some stranger's homemade page about their cat collection. They actually emailed me back a week later, thanking me for the kind words. That one little back and forth made me realize the web was about people, not just pixels. Now I spend evenings digging through the Wayback Machine to find those personal pages again. It feels different than scrolling feeds, more like reading someone's diary. Anyone else ever get a reply from a total stranger on an old site that stuck with you?

Ha, I'm the total opposite. Those old guestbook pages were mostly dead ends and broken links, not some magic window into real people. The web's better now, a wall of strangers I'll never hear from again beats waiting weeks for one lukewarm reply.
