Hot take: guestbook links were better than the actual content

I read someone saying the guestbook was just a way to bump hit counters, and I gotta push back. On my old Angelfire page, the guestbook was where the real conversations happened, people trading MP3 recommendations and arguing about which cheat code was legit. The main site was static text and clip art, but that guestbook had genuine life every single night for a solid 2 years. Am I the only one who actually misses those messy, reverse-chronological shoutouts more than the pages themselves?

Man, that part about "trading MP3 recommendations" hit me right in the gut. My Geocities page was basically a shrine to bad MIDI files, but the guestbook was where I found people who actually knew where to get the good stuff. We'd drop links to obscure Napster mirrors and argue for hours about whether the GameShark code for infinite health actually bricked your save file. The site itself was just a boring front porch, but that guestbook was the living room where everyone hung out. I still remember the regulars by their screen names, not by anything on the main page. Those messy, reverse-chronological shoutouts were the whole point, and yeah, I've never found that same community vibe since.
