Just realized I was wrong about those old animated GIF backgrounds

I used to think they were the coolest thing ever and put them on every page I made back in '98. Then I tried to read a friend's site with a swirling purple starfield behind white text and got a headache after 5 minutes. Now I stick to solid colors or subtle tiled patterns for any site I'm building in that style. Anyone else have a 90s design element they loved but can't stand anymore?

Funny how that works. I was the same way with those animated under construction signs. Seeing one on a modern site now just makes me question the whole page.

Remember those little web page visitor counters? I used to think they were the coolest thing. Now if I see one, I close the tab immediately. It just screams that nothing has been updated since 2004.
