My 1997 fan page loaded in 4 seconds on dial-up once I dropped the animated GIF background
I built a GeoCities page for my favorite local band in 1997 and it took forever to load. The whole thing had a tiled star GIF background, a spinning guitar, and a hit counter that ate up space. I made a second version with a plain black background and just text and one small photo, and it loaded in about 4 seconds on my 28.8k modem. Same content, way less waiting. Anyone else remember timing their pages with a stopwatch just to see if dial-up folks would stick around?
