My 1997 GeoCities page got 4,000 hits in one week because I put a dancing baby GIF in the wrong frame
Back in 1997 I built a GeoCities page about my dog in the SoHo/Yorktown neighborhood and spent maybe 40 hours on it, all tiled star backgrounds and a hit counter I checked every hour. I accidentally pasted my animated dancing baby GIF into the frameset file instead of the main content, so it looped over the whole screen no matter where you clicked. Next thing I knew a webring I joined called it the "most annoying site on the internet" and linked to me from their front page, and my counter went from 12 visits a day to 4,000 that week. I never fixed the frame because people kept signing my guestbook just to yell about the baby. Did anyone else have a broken frame or marquee that somehow made their site way more popular?
