My first homepage had white text on a bright yellow background for 4 years

I coded my personal site back in 1997 using Notepad and never checked how it looked on a different monitor. Every time I opened it at my desk in Portland it seemed fine, so I kept adding more yellow sections as my photo gallery grew. Last summer my buddy pulled it up on his older CRT and the text was basically invisible, just a glare blob. He asked why I had a blank page with a menu bar, and that's when it hit me that I had never viewed it on any other screen. Has anyone else had a design habit that only made sense on your own setup?
