My GeoCities fan page got wiped by a bad FTP upload last Tuesday
I was in my dorm room at UMass trying to update the guestbook on my 'X-Files' fan site. I accidentally uploaded a blank index.html file over the whole thing, which took down all 87 pages of content. It took me three hours to restore from the floppy disk backups I kept in a shoebox. Anyone else have a close call with early web hosting that made you a backup fanatic?

Oh man, that sick feeling in your stomach when you realize what you just did. I lost a whole Angelfire site once, not even a backup on a floppy, just gone. That pain is real. It absolutely made me a backup nut forever. I have copies of everything now, in like three different places. You just don't forget that kind of panic.

Angelfire sites were a whole mood. My friend spent months building a fan page for some early 2000s band, just gone one day after a computer crash. The sheer number of animated gifs lost to time, you know? It's a special kind of digital heartbreak that just doesn't happen now. Makes you wonder what weird corner of the internet we're all going to lose next.
