My GeoCities page hit 1,000 visitors in 1998 and I printed the counter out at Kinko's
Back in 1998 I ran a GeoCities page about X-Files fan theories and I had one of those hit counters at the bottom, the ugly odometer kind with the black background. I checked it every single day after school, sometimes twice, and for months it crawled along at like 12 hits a day. Then one Tuesday in October it rolled over to 1,000 and I literally screamed loud enough that my mom yelled up the stairs asking if I was okay. I biked to the Kinko's on High Street and paid $1.50 to print the counter as a screenshot on glossy paper, then taped it inside my trapper keeper. Nobody in my real life cared at all, but some guy named WolfmanX from a message board signed my guestbook and said congrats, and that felt huge. Looking back, half those hits were probably me refreshing the page, but I still have that printout in a shoebox somewhere. Did anyone else here obsess over their hit counter like it was a grade on a report card?

Printed mine too when it hit 500, but I used the library printer and the librarian gave me a weird look. The trick was posting my link in webrings, that got me way more hits than refreshing ever did.
