My Uncle's Geocities site made me rethink what 'good' means
Went back to my Uncle Larry's old Geocities page last night. He built it in 1997, tiled background, guestbook, the works. He said 'nobody taught us this stuff, we just figured it out.' That hit different because I've been chasing perfect CSS for years. His site has broken links and a MIDI autoplay, but you can feel the effort in every pixel. Makes me wonder if we traded soul for polish. Anyone else got a janky old site that just... works?
This is the same thing I see with my grandma's recipe cards vs the perfectly typed ones on Pinterest. Her cards have grease stains and crossed out amounts and notes in the margins and you can tell she actually made that food a hundred times. The Pinterest version looks nice but nobody ever cooked from it. Same energy as your uncle's site honestly. We got so used to everything looking slick that we forgot the mess is proof a real person was there. A broken link means someone tried something and it did not work out, which is way more human than a template. My old MySpace page had the worst glitter graphics and autoplay songs but I spent hours on that thing and it showed.
