Pro tip: the best day I ever had running a 90s site was when my counter hit 500 visitors

Back in 1998 I ran a little fansite for a forgotten DOS game called "Crystal Caves." I had a visitor counter from WebCounter and it sat at like 12 for months. Then one random Tuesday I checked and it was 487. Then 503. I almost fell out of my chair. Turns out some guy on a forum linked to my page about secret level codes. But here's the debate: does getting a big spike from one link feel better than slow steady growth from search engines? I had both that week and the spike was electric but the steady traffic made my site feel alive longer. What do you all think matters more for a personal site? The thrill of a big day or the quiet grind of daily visits?

My GeoCities site had a guestbook and I think 47 people signed it over two years. That spike you got from the forum link sounds cool but honestly I never saw the point in obsessing over counters. It's just a number sitting there making you feel good or bad for no real reason. I'd rather have 10 people who actually played the game and left a comment than 500 drive-bys who clicked a link and bounced. Feels more real.

So you're saying I should feel bad that my guestbook has 3 entries and two of them are just "nice site" from people who clearly never played the game? That's fair, I guess. But honestly, I still check my counter every time I update the page, just hoping someone clicked through from a random Yahoo search. It's like checking the mail for a check you know isn't coming, but you do it anyway because maybe, just maybe, the number will be higher this time.
