The week I rebuilt my 1997 fan page and got 43 guestbook entries in one day
Back in high school I ran a fan page for a Saturday morning cartoon and the guestbook was the whole point. One week in 1998 I got 43 entries in a single day, mostly from kids in Ohio and one guy in Wales, and I sat there refreshing the page every couple minutes. The site was just a black background, some Comic Sans, three blinking GIFs, and a table of episode summaries I typed from memory. I miss when a web ring badge was the best way to get traffic. Does anyone still have their old guestbook files saved somewhere?

A web ring badge got you 43 entries but Facebook groups for that same cartoon now pull thousands, so guestbooks were a dead end anyway.
