TIL the blinking text on my GeoCities page was actually the whole point, and a guy named Dave in a chat room made me see it
I used to think marquee tags and blinking words were just stuff kids did because they didn't know better, so I rebuilt my old Star Wars fan page in 2023 with clean fonts and no gifs. Then last month in an AOL nostalgia chat room, a guy named Dave from Toledo sent me a link to his 1997 pro wrestling page and said the chaos was the design, it made you feel like the site was alive and yelling at you. I stared at his spinning skull gifs for like 20 minutes and got it, the mess wasn't lazy, it was people being excited with the only tools they had. Anyone else go back and rebuild an old page and realize the ugly stuff was the good stuff?
