Unpopular take: GeoCities sites had better character than modern portfolios
I still think my old GeoCities page from 1998 was way more fun than my current professional site. Used to spend hours picking out the perfect animated GIF backgrounds and visitor counters back then. Switched to a minimalist layout around 2010 because everyone said it looked cleaner, but honestly I miss the chaos. Now every site looks the same gray box with Helvetica text. Anyone else think we lost something when we gave up the sparkly dividers and guestbooks?

My old page had a neon green background with those little animated dancing bananas and a guestbook where people would actually leave messages. I remember getting a hit counter to 500 and feeling like a celebrity or something. You're right about the community part too - I still have a few people I met through those guestbooks on my social media today. The messiness was part of the charm, every page felt like walking into someones actual room instead of a corporate lobby.

You said you miss the chaos and that hits home. That old GeoCities page had personality because it wasn't afraid to be ugly or messy. Every site now looks like it was built by the same corporate template machine. The visitor counter and guestbook gave it a sense of community too. We traded character for polish and lost something real along the way.
