Update: I stopped using image maps on my retro fansite after a guy emailed me about screen readers
I ran a Twin Peaks fan page with a big sliced-up image map menu and thought it looked incredible. Last month a visitor named Dale from Ohio sent me a note saying his screen reader just read "image, image, image" and he could not get past my front page at all. I swapped the map out for plain text links with a little CSS border and honestly the page loads faster now and I actually update it more. Still using tables to lay out the photo gallery though, so maybe I am only half cured. What did you swap out first when you finally gave up on image maps?
