Used to hate those splash page intros until I found one that actually worked

I always skipped past those big intro pages with the "enter" button and a flash animation. But last week I stumbled on a site from 1997 for a local record store in Austin that had a loading bar and a MIDI version of "Walking on Sunshine." I sat through the whole thing because the art was hand-drawn pixel graphics and the music loop was actually catchy. Now I get why people built them - it set a mood before you even saw the content. Has anyone else found a splash page that didn't feel like a waste of time?

The whole thing reminds me of how people decorate their entryways at home to change how you feel walking in. A good splash page is like a welcome mat and a hallway table with a lamp, it sets a vibe before you even sit down. Most of them just get in the way, but when they work, you actually appreciate the slowdown.

@jade47 nailed it. My entryway's just a pile of shoes and a cobweb, so I feel personally called out by this metaphor. Guess my splash page is more of a "please don't trip" vibe.
