Was talking to an old webmaster and now I question if hit counters were ever useful

Had coffee with a guy who ran a Geocities site back in 96 and he swore hit counters were pure vanity, not traffic data. He said his guestbook was where the real conversations happened, and that got me thinking about how we measure 'success' on retro sites. Do you all still put counters up for nostalgia, or did you actually use them back then?
