Hot take: I skipped the perfect sunset shot for a cracked parking lot and it was the right call
Last week I was leaving the hardware store in Bakersfield around 6pm and the sky was doing that orange and pink thing that makes everyone stop and grab their phone. I had a clear shot of it over the strip mall, but right at my feet was this old cracked asphalt spot where oil had leaked into the cracks and made this dark branching pattern that looked weirdly like a river delta or veins or something. I stood there for maybe 30 seconds trying to decide which one to shoot, and I picked the parking lot. The sunset photo would've just been another sunset photo that 40 other people in that lot were already taking, but the oil crack thing was mine, nobody else even looked down. I posted it later and a buddy said it looked like a satellite photo of the Mississippi, which honestly is way more interesting than a sky pic. We walk past ground all day and never think of it as art but sometimes the dirt under your feet beats the sky. Curious if anyone else has picked the boring ground shot over the pretty sky one and regretted it or not.
