My cracked bathroom tile looked like a perfect mountain range at sunset

Broke a tile in my rental near Portland last month. Dropped a cast iron pan on it. The crack spread in this jagged line, and the rust stain from the pan made it orange and red. Stood there like five minutes thinking it looked like the Cascades at dusk. Landlord said I owe $60 for the tile, I said it's art now. Anyone else had a fix-it disaster turn into something you didn't want to replace?

Portland landlords are legally required to repaint every three years, I looked it up when my place changed hands in 2021. So if the paint is older than that, your rust stain might be on THEIR peeling paint, not your cracked tile. That $60 tile could turn into a free repaint negotiation if you play it right. I had a similar thing with a broken window and a landlord who wanted me to pay, but the weatherstripping was so old it failed inspection. Ended up trading my $40 window fee for him fixing the drafty door frame. Point is, check your local tenant laws before you hand over money, they sometimes work in your favor for the weirdest stuff.
