Spilled milk on the counter and it looked like a ghost

Back when I was a kid, my mom would just wipe up a spill with a rag and that was it. Last week, I knocked over a glass of milk and it splashed across my black granite countertop in this perfect, wispy shape. I actually grabbed my phone and took a picture before cleaning it. The way the light hit the edges made it look like a little phantom floating there. Anyone else find weird art in their kitchen messes?

Ever try using a black surface for that?

Honestly the "black surface" idea always seemed wrong to me, like it would just get too hot. But I tried it last summer and it actually worked way better than my old setup. The contrast made everything so much easier to see and it just performed better. Totally changed how I do things now.

My neighbor actually has a white quartz counter, and I gotta say milk spills on that look way less interesting, just kind of a mess. But @mason417, I think you're missing the point here. The whole appeal of black surfaces is that they make messes look dramatic and artistic, not "easier to see" which is just a practical way to look at it. If you wanted something that just works, youd get a white counter where you can spot every crumb. The whole reason this ghost thing worked is because the milk was glowing against the dark, like fog against a night sky. Take the contrast away and its just another boring spill you wipe up without a second thought.
