PSA: My air fryer had a bad week and turned broccoli into charcoal

Last Tuesday I decided to make some buffalo cauliflower bites from a recipe my sister shared. I set it to 400 degrees for 18 minutes like she said, but my old model runs way hotter and I ended up with little black briquettes. The whole kitchen smelled like burnt plastic for two days. Has anyone else had their air fryer cook way faster than the recipe says?

Ngl I think the real issue here is nobody talks about how air fryers have totally different personalities even within the same brand. My buddy has a newer model and his 400 is like my 350 on a good day. Honestly it's wild how inconsistent they are. My advice would be to buy a cheap oven thermometer and check what your air fryer actually runs at so you're not guessing every time. Tbh that burnt plastic smell is the worst, it lingers forever no matter how much you air it out.

Duuuude the personality thing is so real. My sister's air fryer is like ten degrees hotter than mine no matter what setting I put it on. I literally burned a batch of fries the first time I used hers because I trusted the numbers not my gut. That oven thermometer tip is solid, I grabbed one from the grocery store for like five bucks and it totally changed how I cook. That plastic smell though, I had to leave my windows open overnight once and it still faintly smelled the next morning.
