40 years of boiling water for pasta and the kettle just changed everything

My mom watched me fill a stockpot from the tap and wait for it to boil, then she pointed at the old whistling kettle on the stove and said 'why are you heating the water twice?' and now I'm questioning every kitchen habit I picked up from her side of the family, has anyone else had a basic routine shattered by a simple question like that?
