I switched my whole grocery list to a paper index card for 6 weeks and my bill dropped by $47
I keep a running list on my phone like everyone else, but about 6 weeks ago I got sick of scrolling through it in the store while a notification popped up every 30 seconds, so I dug out a 3x5 index card and a golf pencil from my junk drawer and started writing the list by hand on Sunday nights. The first thing I noticed is that I actually remember what is on the card without looking at it, which meant I stopped wandering down aisles I did not need. By week three I was checking my pantry before I wrote anything down, and I found two cans of black beans and a bag of rice I had no idea I had, so I stopped buying duplicates. At the end of the first month I compared receipts and my total for the four weeks was $47 lower than the month before, and I was not even trying to save money. The weird part is that crossing items off with the pencil feels good in a way that swiping a checkbox never did, and I finish the trip faster because I am not getting pulled into coupon apps. I did forget to write down dish soap one week and had to make a second trip, so it is not perfect, but I am not going back to the phone list. Does anyone else write their list on paper, and if so do you sort it by aisle or just scribble it in the order you think of things?
