I tried mending a ripped tent seam with beeswax and a hot spoon instead of tape.
It held through a whole weekend of rain in the Smokies, and now I'm wondering what other gear can be fixed with stuff from the kitchen.

Your "gear repair closet" idea shows how we're all just quietly jury-rigging modern life.

That beeswax trick is LEGIT. I fixed a busted backpack strap with a strip cut from a milk jug and a lighter to melt the edges smooth. A wine cork can sharpen a knife in a pinch, and I've patched a hole in a pot cozy with aluminum foil and packing tape. The kitchen is basically a gear repair closet.

Toss a ball of aluminum foil in the dryer to cut static if you forget dryer sheets. It works better than you'd think. @simon_davis is right about that jury-rigging thing. I've also used a dab of superglue mixed with baking soda to patch a cracked plastic buckle on a tent strap. Hold it with a toothpick while it sets.
