Just realized my phone-free Sunday started with a paper map in Portland

Last weekend I forgot my charger at home and used a folded city map from a gas station to navigate downtown Portland for 6 hours. It took me three wrong turns to remember how to read the scale, but I saw way more cool alleys than GPS ever showed me. Has anyone else tried a map-only day trip and found their sense of direction actually improved?

Wait, a paper map from a gas station? Those things are like relics now. I thought they stopped printing them. Six hours though, that's wild. I tried this once in Seattle and ended up walking through a construction site because the map didn't show the new roads. Still, I found this tiny ramen spot that Google never flags. My sense of direction is still garbage though. Honestly, I'm impressed you lasted that long without cheating and pulling out your phone.
