Laid out a whole plumbing repair by hand on paper and it took 3 hours what a mess

So my kitchen sink pipe burst last Tuesday and I thought I'd just sketch the fix on graph paper instead of watching a video. Spent a whole hour measuring angles with a protractor and another 2 hours trying to figure out the right pipe lengths from my notes. Ended up buying a 4 inch piece that was totally wrong and had to go back to the hardware store twice. Anyone else waste a whole afternoon on a simple fix like this?

oh man the protractor is what got me. you actually busted out a protractor for pipe angles? like from a geometry class? i respect the dedication but that's next level overthinking. i would've just eyeballed it and hoped for the best, which is probably why all my sink drips still. going to the hardware store twice though, that hits close to home. i did that last month for a toilet flapper and ended up just buying three different sizes to avoid a third trip.

Tape the protractor to your level so you always know your angles before you cut.
