My kitchen clock stopped and I had to figure out the old way

The battery in my wall clock gave out right in the middle of making dinner last night. I was so used to just glancing up at it while I cooked. My phone was charging in the other room, and I realized I had no idea what time it was. I ended up using the old trick my grandma taught me, looking at the angle of the sun coming through the window over the sink. It was about a quarter to six by my guess. I finished up the potatoes, and when I finally checked my phone later, I was only off by ten minutes. It felt good to not be a slave to a digital readout for a little while. Does anyone else have a backup method for telling time when the usual stuff fails?

That sun trick is solid, but it only works if you know which way your window faces. My kitchen window looks west, so the light is useless in the morning. I mean, @theagarcia is right about the feeling though. I keep a cheap wind-up clock in a drawer now for when the power goes out.

Ever think it was silly to guess time by the sun? I totally did, until my power went out for a whole afternoon last fall. My phone died, and my watch was digital, so I was stuck. I tried judging the light like you did, and it actually worked well enough to know when to start making dinner. Kind of makes you feel a bit more connected, you know?
