My paper map book finally paid off after 2 years of feeling silly
Two years ago I started keeping a spiral bound road atlas in my glovebox ($12 at a gas station in Boise) and printing out MapQuest pages before road trips, mostly as a backup in case my phone died. Last weekend my phone battery hit 1% in the middle of nowhere outside Twin Falls and I navigated the last 40 minutes home with just the paper map and road signs. My wife laughed at me when I first started doing this, but she was the one holding the atlas open on her lap while I drove. I still use GPS for most trips, but there is something about reading exit numbers off a page that feels more connected to where you actually are. Has anyone else gone back to paper maps, or am I just being stubborn about this?
