My uncle Frank made me rethink paper maps last Sunday

We were driving to his cabin near Ely, Minnesota, and he pulled out a folded up topo map from 1993. He showed me how he marks trails with a yellow highlighter and notes changes in the margins over time. Made me realize I've been missing out on actually knowing the land instead of just following a blue dot. Any of you guys keep old maps with notes like that?

The campsite thing is neat, but paper maps just slow me down when I'm trying to cover ground.

Ngl, I literally had to double take when you said 1993. Like, that map is older than me and still being used? That's wild. I get what he's saying though, my buddy has this old USGS quad for the John Muir Trail and he's got all these little x's marking campsites that don't exist anymore. Makes you realize how much the ground actually changes season to season.
