My uncle swore by his paper map trick for finding new hiking spots, but it backfired on me.

He told me to get a 2005 edition USGS topo map of the White Mountains and use a compass to pick a spot at least two inches from any marked trail. I tried it last fall, ended up in a thick swamp for three hours and had to turn back. Do you think some analog advice is just too disconnected from how places change over time, or did I mess up the method?

Maps don't lie, but landscapes do change. Maybe add a modern satellite check to the old method.

Yeah, I always cross reference with Google Earth before heading out. Saved me from a few wild goose chases last season.

Lost Creek Reservoir changed course on me two years ago because beavers redid the whole drainage pattern. Google Earth still shows the old stream bed. You ever catch a satellite image that was so outdated it sent you into a dead end swamp or something?
