PSA: The old timer who told me to use vinegar instead of fabric softener was absolutely right.

After 3 months of towels that actually absorb water instead of just pushing it around, I am never going back to that scented goop, has anyone else made the switch and noticed their clothes last longer too?

Respectfully, I'm in the OTHER camp on this one. I tried vinegar for a few months and my clothes came out smelling like a pickle salad, even with the extra rinse cycle. Plus my dark t-shirts got these weird faded patches that looked like bleach spots. Maybe I used too much or didn't dilute it right but it was a TOTAL disaster for my laundry. I'll stick with my unscented fabric softener that actually makes my towels soft and fluffy, even if they don't soak up every drop.

Okay so here's the thing nobody brings up about the vinegar laundry thing - it actually DESTROYS your washing machine rubber seals over time. I learned this the hard way after my front loader started leaking and the repair guy showed me the door gasket all cracked and brittle. He said the acidity eats away at the rubber, plastic parts, and even the little drain pump impeller. So you might end up with a $400 repair bill just from trying to save a few bucks on detergent. Plus if you're on a septic system like me, the vinegar kills the good bacteria in the tank and messes up the whole breakdown process. Total hidden costs that nobody talks about in those DIY posts.
