Showerthought: Darning socks made me value handmade things more

In my experience, sitting down to mend a hole is a calm time away from screens. Your mileage may vary, but I've found that socks last longer when I fix them myself. Take this with a grain of salt, but learning this old skill from my grandma has been really helpful. It's a small way to live with less digital stuff.

Learning from your grandma sounds special... did she have any particular tricks or stories she shared while teaching you? I'm curious if mending socks made you notice the quality of other clothes differently. Like, do you find yourself checking seams or fabrics more now?

Totally, mending socks with my grandma did make me notice quality way more. She had this trick where she'd use a light bulb to stretch the sock over for darning, and she'd talk about reusing everything from fabric scraps to old buttons. Now I check seams and fabrics on all my clothes without even thinking, lol. It's part of a bigger pattern where I see how much we throw away instead of fixing things, which kinda bums me out. @jade47, you hit on something real with that question because it made me slow down and actually look at what I buy. My grandma's lessons stuck with me, and now I get annoyed at flimsy stitching or thin material because I know it won't last.
