That old cassette deck I nearly threw out ended up being a lifesaver

I was cleaning out my basement last Saturday and found my dad's old Sony cassette deck from the 80s. I almost tossed it in the trash because who uses tapes anymore, right? But we lost power for 3 days after a storm and my phone died in 6 hours. I dug out my old mix tapes, popped in some fresh batteries, and that thing played for 12 hours straight. It got me thinking, has anyone else kept a piece of analog gear around that saved them in a pinch?

so I got a little too proud of my "vintage vibe" setup and now I'm the person who brings a literal boombox to the park. my phone's battery is trash, so I just carry around a 90s Sony radio that takes 6 D batteries. I look like I'm about to start a flash mob from 1987, but at least I can listen to my mix of bad 90s pop while everyone else is begging for a charger at the coffee shop.

Woah wait, six D batteries? That's like $15 just to get it running for an afternoon.
