TIL my grandfather's method for sharpening scissors with a coffee mug actually works
I spent 25 bucks on a fancy sharpening stone last week and got worse results than when I just ran the blades along the bottom of a ceramic mug like my grandpa showed me 15 years ago. The rough ring where the mug sits on the counter creates just enough friction to clean up the edge without overdoing it. Has anyone else tried this trick or am I just lucky my kitchenware happened to work?

Wait, you spent money on a sharpening stone and it messed up your scissors? That's wild. I've been using the bottom of a coffee mug for years too, but I always thought I was just being cheap. My grandpa used the unglazed bottom of a flower pot once and it worked like magic. The ceramic ring on mugs is basically the same grit as those expensive water stones, just way less messy.

Your grandpa using a flower pot bottom is exactly the kind of resourceful move I respect." My dad sharpened his pocket knife on the concrete edge of our garage floor for thirty years and swore by it. Sometimes the fancy tools just overcomplicate something that's already been figured out with everyday stuff.
