A guy at the camera club in Spokane told me my street shots were "just feet" and it bugged me for a month
I shoot a lot of street stuff around Spokane with my Olympus XA and I brought a stack of prints to the monthly camera club meetup back in March. An older guy named Dale flipped through them slow, got to about the seventh one, and said "these are just feet, pal. I want to see where the person is going." I was annoyed at first because I thought he was being a jerk, but then I looked at my own prints and he was dead right. Almost every frame was cropped at the knees with a subject walking out of the shot and no background doing any work. So I changed two things. I stopped shooting at chest height on the sly and started framing wider so the street sign or the storefront behind the person actually says something, and I made myself wait for the subject to walk into the frame instead of firing the second I see them. My keeper rate went from maybe 2 out of 36 to 8 or 9 out of 36, which for me is huge. Dale was right and I hate that he was right. Anyway, has anyone else gotten a one-liner from a club member that stuck in your head like a splinter?
