A stranger at the flea market changed how I shoot portraits

I was selling prints at a flea market in Portland last Saturday, and this older guy stopped and said my portraits looked like mugshots, too stiff. He told me to hand the camera to the subject and let them take their own shot with a cable release. I tried it on my next roll of Tri-X with a friend, and yeah, the photos have this looseness I never got before. Anyone else handed control over to their subject and liked the result?

Funny how letting go in photos is the same trick everyone forgets in everyday life.
