Finally noticed why my downtown shots all looked flat

I shot the same alley on 35mm for two years without thinking about the light. Then I went back at 4pm instead of noon and the brick texture popped like I had a different lens. Has anyone else had a time of day suddenly click for them?

The light at 4pm is magic... I had the same realization shooting an old warehouse district near my place. For months I'd go at 10am and everything was just washed out and boring. Then one evening I was driving by at golden hour and the red brick turned almost orange against the blue sky. Now I barely shoot anything before 3pm unless it's an overcast day... totally changes how textures read on film especially.

Noticed the same thing with my morning coffee spot. Used to sit there at 8am and the place looked flat and dead in photos. Went back at 4:30 last week and the light coming through the window hit the old wood tables just right. Made me wonder how much of our daily life we walk through at the wrong time of day without even realizing it.
