I paid $85 for a CLA on a $20 thrift store point and shoot and the shutter jammed 3 weeks later

The camera guy at the shop in Sacramento said the old lubricants had turned to glue and it would cost more to fix than the camera was worth. Has anyone here ever gotten a real keeper from a thrift store or is that just a story we tell ourselves?
