I picked a beat up Canon AE-1 over a practically new Pentax K1000 and don't regret it
Went to a camera swap meet in Denver last spring. Everyone was swarming the Pentax table saying they're more reliable and better built. But I grabbed this scratched up AE-1 with a stuck shutter button for $40. Spent an afternoon cleaning the contacts with some isopropyl and it's been my daily shooter for 6 months now. The Pentax might be tougher but the AE-1 just feels right in my hands. Plus the shutter priority mode makes street shots way easier. Anyone else go for the underdog camera and end up liking it more?

That forty dollar fix tells me you got lucky, not that the AE-1 is actually better built.

Didn't someone test one of those back in the 80s and find the AE-1 had cheaper plastic parts inside?
