My entire roll from a trip to the coast came back blank. The camera shop said the shutter on my Pentax K1000 is stuck open.

Oh man, that exact thing happened to my K1000! Total blank roll, same diagnosis. I was so bummed, thought it was a lost cause. Angela's totally right, it's almost always that old grease getting gummy. I sent mine to a repair shop I found through a film photography forum. They did the full clean and lube, and it came back shooting like a dream. It's honestly worth fixing, these old cameras are built to last if you get them serviced.

My old K1000 did the same thing last year. The shutter curtain grease had basically turned to glue. I found a guy online who specializes in fixing these old mechanical cameras. He cleaned and re-lubricated the whole shutter assembly for about eighty bucks. It works perfectly now, better than it did before it stuck. Might be worth looking for a repair person instead of writing it off.
