My favorite film photo is also my biggest ethical dilemma

It captures a raw moment without the subject's consent.

yeah I've totally been there, I mean my camera roll is basically a hall of fame for my worst impulses. once took a shot of a guy sleeping on the subway looking really peaceful, and now I just feel like a creep every time I look at it. maybe it's just me but I figure if the universe gives you a perfect photo, the least it could do is also hand out consent forms.

I get what Craig means about the universe handing out consent forms. What ended up working for me was actually carrying a small print of the photo for a while. I saw the woman again at the same market, showed it to her, and just said I thought it was a nice moment. She liked it, and I gave her the print. Turns out she just wanted a copy for her mom. It solved the creep factor for me.

Man, the universe needs to get its act together and start a proper consent department. You're out here doing its job for it, carrying around prints like a photo delivery service. Glad it worked out, but I'm not turning my pockets into a mini photo lab for every nice moment I catch. Next time I get a good shot, I'm just gonna hope the subject has a mom who wants a copy too.
