My first 20 rolls I shot at f/8 metered with a phone app, now I just guess and my keeper rate is higher
Shot a roll of Portra at the Santa Monica pier last weekend with zero metering and got 29 keepers out of 36, which never happened back when I was chasing every reading, so I'm wondering if anyone else ditched the meter and never looked back.

The "chasing every reading" part is what got me. I used to bring my light meter everywhere and second guess every shot, and my pics were worse for it. Started just reading the light with my eyes and going with my gut on shutter speed, and my last two rolls had way more shots I actually liked. Turns out all that metering was making me slow and unsure instead of helping.

Gut instinct is great until it isn't, because your eyes adjust to the light and a scene that reads fine to you can still come out two stops off. Reading light is a skill worth building, @fionak63, but it works a lot better when you check it against a meter now and then instead of tossing the meter out.
