Rant: a guy at the Austin photo walk told me my scans looked flat and I argued for 10 minutes
Ngl I was pretty proud of my Portra 400 shots from a trip to Marfa until this guy named Dev at a photo walk said my scans looked flat and washed out. I got defensive and said that's just how lab scans look, but he pulled up the same negative on his phone and the difference was wild. Come to find out I had been paying $12 a roll for basic JPEGs and never asked for TIFFs or a flat scan profile. So now I ask for flat TIFFs and do my own color in Darktable, and my shadows actually have detail instead of turning into gray mush. Tbh I still feel a little dumb about it. Anyone else here switch up their scanning setup after someone called out their photos?
Wait so what did the flat TIFF actually look like when you first opened it? Did it look super gray and boring before you edited it? I'm thinking about asking my lab for the same thing but I'm scared I'll open it and have no clue what to do.
